UFC 258: Kamaru Usman successfully defends UFC welterweight title, stopping Gilbert Burns

After defeating Gilbert Burns in Las Vegas, Kamaru Usman smashed Georges St. Pierre’s UFC record for straight welterweight victories, then called out Jorge Masvidal for a rematch:

“I’ll give you a whole training camp, and this time I will stop him. I promise you.”

Kamaru Usman successfully defended his welterweight title against former training partner and friend Gilbert Burns with his 13th consecutive UFC victory. For the third time, Usman (18-1) defended his title and created another resourceful, intelligent effort that ended with a furious show of power to stop Burns (19-4).
Only Anderson Silva, who won 16 straight fights as the long-ruling middleweight champion of the UFC, has won more consecutive UFC bouts than Usman, who also tied the mark of Khabib Nurmagomedov to start a UFC career for the second-most consecutive wins. Six fighters have racked up 13 consecutive UFC wins, joined by Usman.
And ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ wasted no time calling out former opponent Jorge Masvidal after the fight. The two met at UFC 251 in July last year, with Masvidal taking the fight with just 6 days’ notice. A unanimous decision victory was secured by Usman, but the 33-year-old wasn’t happy with how the fight went and wants a rematch now.

“That fight – he had a built-in excuse, that’s the only reason he took that fight, we tried to make that fight twice before he said ‘No’. He’s been saying no,” Usman told reporters.

“The only reason he took that fight on Fight Island is because there was a built-in excuse. He was training the whole time! But he said, ‘Oh, I only had six days’ notice. So that’s why that went that way.’ Well, guess what – I’ll give you a whole training camp, and this time I will stop him. I promise you.
